The city is supervised by Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka. The city was founded by Samuel Baker, the traveler of Lake Albert and the upper Nile in 1846. The park was officially named in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.The park was started with the planting of its first tree, an Oak, by a call on German Princess. The Nanu Oya River goes through the park, making a number of small lakes. A number of rare bird species can be found in the park. At the far end of the park is a small children's playground. It has extensive lawns, flower beds and a large cascading pond. This is a great place to relax and spend an afternoon.

Gregory Lake

This beautiful Lake in Nuwara Eliya is a must visit with your family & friends. In the evening and It was very windy. Gregory lake is a large artificial lake. Gregory Lake was completed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. The lake and the nearby area construct up the Gregory Lake Area. In 1913 the waters of the lake were focused into a tunnel which flows to a hydro power station at 'Blackpool' between the town and Nanu Oya. The power station resumes to supply electricity to the town to this day. There are a few activities in this lake. The lake is quite large, there are boat rides and jet bikes and pedals. There are also a few food stalls.

Moon Plains

This area is now confidential as an Agrarian and Eco-friendly Tourism Zone by the Municipal of Nuwara Eliya and was opened on 25th March 2014. Horton Plains

The largest adorable and amazing plain in Sri Lanka ,Horton Plains are two entrances to this place named as Pattipola and Ohiya gates. This plains at a height of 2,100–2,300 meters is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region.The Horton Plains has gone to the UNESCO world heritage site in 2010, as part of the Central Highlands area. This plains was discovered by the planter Thomas Farr in the early 19th century. You can reach the southern coast main line through the hortant plains with the beautiful and experience. Also the good time for visiting Horton Plains is from January to March very early in the morning. There are huge crowds of Sri Lankan sambar deer. Also a significant bird area with many species not only common to Sri Lanka but limited to the Horton Plains. This Plains is situated on the southern side of the central highlands. The mountains of Kirigalpoththa 2,389 metres and Thotupola Kanda 2,357 metres , the second and the third highest of Sri Lanka, are located to the west and north separately. Normal cloud cover limits the quantity of daylight that is presented to plants. It is considered that Thotupala mountain in Horton plain to be the place where King Rawana landed his aircraft, 'Dandumonaraya'. For Sri Lankans, Horton Plains is very significant in their History and Culture. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa plants specially grow in woodland edges and nearby the highland points. In Horton plains has a popular tourist destination called World's End. World's End is a height with a 870 m (2,854 ft) drop. Here, through the very clear sky, you can see the Samanala water dam,Udawalawe water tank,chandrika lake and southern beach. It is located at the southern borderline of the park. Baker's Falls, a waterfall created by Belihul Oya. The waterfall is 20 meters (66 ft) high. Slab Rock Falls is an extra waterfall in the plains. Camping and hiking at Horton plain is a unique experience.

Piduruthalagala

Piduruthalagala is a stunning place you must visit in Sri Lanka and this is the highest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,524 m (8,281 ft). It is located North-East from the town of Nuwara Eliya and is simply visible from the greatest areas of the Central Province. The peak is presently entitled as an "Ultra-high security zone", and is covered by a huge military base.Piduruthalagala mountain has been famoused during british government. Always great to visit this place on a sunny and clear day, because certain things are not clear when it’s covered and surrounded by the cloudy mist.You are literally in the clouds and weather changes from moment to moment. The mountain top gives you a panoramic view of the rest of the mountains. It is motor-able almost up-to the viewing point, and there is plenty of wildlife. The surrounding mountain ranges are closely associated with the “Ramayana” of Hindu Mythology.

How to reach Nuwara Eliya?

The best way is to reach Nuwara Eliya by the most beautiful train journey. Because you can see the lovely scenery and you will feel relaxed. Nuwara Eliya does not have a railway station. travelers can take the train from Nanu oya Station. Nanu Oya is linked to Colombo through the Main Line that joins Colombo to Badulla. This is one of the most attractive journeys in Sri Lanka. After you finish your train journey, you can travel by taxi / buses or tuk tuk from Nanu oya station to Nuwara Eliya. It is about 9.2 kilometer, and it will take approximately 20 min.
